What are eyelash extensions and how are they applied?
Eyelash extensions are single synthetic lashes applied directly to the natural lash, close to (but not touching) the lash line with a semi-permanent bonding adhesive. A single extension is applied to a single lash, leaving the eyelashes and eyelids to move freely. They are applied carefully, one by one using specially designed tweezers. The whole process normally takes between 60 to 90 minutes depending on how many lashes are applied.
How long do eyelash extensions last?
They can last up to 4-6 weeks - as the eyelash extension generally lasts until the natural lash falls out in its natural cycle. However, if you wish to maintain them, it is advisable to have infills applied approximately every 2-3 weeks (depending on how well you take care of them and your natural lash cycle), as by this stage some would have fallen out as new lashes have grown through. How long your eyelash extensions last depends almost entirely on how you care for them (i.e. by removing makeup correctly, not wearing mascara, not using oily products on your face, and not tugging/pulling at your eyelash extensions). Some clients who take extra good care of their lashes get 4+ weeks before they need infills!
Why do I need infills if they last up to six weeks?
The eyelash extensions fall out with your natural lash cycle – which is 6-8 weeks, so very gradually – just a few here and there as new baby lashes come through. After 2 or 3 weeks you will start seeing little gaps where the old ones have fallen, and new ones are coming through – so at this point it’s a good time to get infills, so your lashes always look nice and full.
How much do eyelash extensions cost?
A standard full set of eyelashes, consisting of around 70+ lashes per eye costs $150, or for a glamour set up to 100 individual lashes $199. It really all depends on the look you are hoping to achieve. For a complete list of our prices, please see our price page.
Do eyelash extensions damage your natural lashes?
No – we apply eyelash extensions taking special care to ensure that they are all applied individually and correctly to maintain your eyelash health. To ensure the ongoing health of your lashes, we highly recommend that you take the advice of the stylist regarding the maximum thickness and length that would be appropriate long-term for your natural lashes. The eyelash extensions come off when your natural lash falls out, and so long as an appropriate weight extension has been applied, your natural lashes will grow through as normal. Please listen to the technicians’ advice about how long/heavy you should go if you have naturally thin or sparse lashes. Don’t try to remove the eyelash extensions yourself – as this could easily damage your natural lashes, as the adhesive bond is extremely strong.
Sometimes clients choose not to take our advice regarding the lashes and do request extra long and thick lashes be applied to their thin or fine natural lashes. We will advise against this as we cannot guarantee that they will last well if they are too long or heavy for your natural lash to support. We will apply the lashes that you request, within reason. Usually, as a one-off or special occasion wear, extra long or thick lashes will cause no problems at all, but long-term it can weaken your lashes.
But I have a friend who said her lashes were damaged by lash extensions?
Inexperienced technicians or those who rush (beware beauty salons who do not specialize!) are apt to apply lashes that are too heavy/clumped together which can definitely result in damaged lashes. Our aim at Wink Beauty Bar is to give you beautiful lashes all the time, with no damage to your natural lashes. We customize the lashes so they are the right weight and thickness, and apply them carefully, one by one, so that your natural lashes remain as healthy as ever!
Is having eyelash extensions applied painful?
No. I am often asked ‘are eyelash extensions painful?’ and the answer is no – not if applied properly! The eyelash extensions are applied directly to the eyelash, so there is no contact with the skin. It may feel a little unusual the first time, but once you get used to it, it should be so comfortable that you may drift off to sleep! Wink Beauty Bar only uses high quality relatively fume free glue, which does not burn or sting, unlike cheaper products. People with extremely sensitive eyes or sinus problems may get some watering and slight stinging at the end, but this subsides within seconds.
Will eyelash extensions irritate my eyes?
No – once your eyelash extensions are applied, they will feel just like your normal lashes – you shouldn’t feel any difference. The eyelash extension is bonded to the actual lash, not your eyelid skin, so it feels just like your normal lashes. One extension is applied to each lash individually, so your eyelashes can move freely. You should be careful not to roughly rub your eyes though, as this can damage the extensions could make them a little uncomfortable.
I have had bad extensions applied somewhere else and would like them removed and some new ones put on – is this possible?
In most cases, yes – but if you have had particularly bad extensions done somewhere else (particularly overseas) we cannot absolutely guarantee that we will be able to remove them or apply new ones immediately. It depends on how bad a state your lashes are in. If there is an awful lot of glue and many lashes fused together, it can take some time to remove the extensions gently. If the bad extensions have irritated or infected your eyes/eyelids, we reserves the right not to perform the procedure, and may refer you to initially seek medical advice.
I have made a booking to have eyelash extensions put on. Is there anything I need to do beforehand?
The main thing is to have clean eyes and eyelashes, free of makeup – especially mascara. Some mascaras contain oils that can prevent eyelash extensions bonding correctly. Be sure to use an oil-free makeup remover if removing makeup, and don’t use any oil or petroleum based products on or around the eye area for 48 hours prior (such as Vaseline or moisturizers).
Can I bring my (small) children to the appointment?
We highly, highly recommend against it. The environment is serene and quiet, and it is really not the ideal environment for small children at all. Additionally, as your eyes must remain closed for the duration of the treatment, and your stylist will be focusing on you – there will be no supervision for your children, which could be dangerous! Our insurance does not cover unattended children in the salon, and we would hate for anything to happen.
Can I wear eye makeup with my eyelash extensions?
Yes, you can. Eyeliner and eye shadow are fine – you just need to be a little gentle. We don’t recommend that you apply mascara to your eyelash extensions, as this can cause them to clump together and may contain oils that weaken the adhesive bond on your eyelash extensions, so they will not last as long. If you are intent on wearing mascara, we stocks Xtreme Lash mascara made specifically for use on eyelash extensions.
What about removing eye makeup?
You must use an OIL FREE makeup remover, as oil based removers will damage the adhesive and could make the eyelash extensions fall off prematurely. Wink Beauty Bar stocks Xtreme Lash makeup remover that is formulated specifically for eye lash extensions.
Can I swim/shower/ get my eyelash extensions wet?
Yes. In fact this is one of the best things about eyelash extensions – you will have pretty eyes ALL the time – when you wake up, straight out of the shower, out of the pool. Just don’t rub them or use detergents or oily soaps and they will last a long time.
Can you be allergic to eyelash extension adhesive?
Like all cosmetic products, there are some individuals who may be allergic to this particular adhesive. Allergic reactions are extremely rare however, and subside normally as soon as the extensions are removed. If you have had an allergic reaction to any eyelash extensions before (swollen, puffy eyelids and under eye area) we should not have lash extensions again – as it is highly likely you will be allergic again. If you do have an allergic reaction, you must seek medical attention prior to making an appointment to remove the extensions as soon as possible. We cannot give out medical advice, however from our experience some Dr’s will recommend not removing the extensions immediately as this can cause further irritation.
Do you do gift card?
Yes, we have gift cards for any amount of treatment cost. You can purchase them from us at our salon. They are a perfect gift for that glamorous friend who has everything!
Do I need to make an appointment?
Yes, appointments are generally necessary. Our morning appointments between (10am-1pm), and evening appointments (between 4-7pm) are the most popular and can sometimes book out weeks ahead. Please contact us to arrange a time that suits you.
How do I take care of my eyelash extensions so they last longer?
There are a few simple steps you can take to make sure you get the most out of your eyelash extensions. At your appointment, we give you an after-care card outlining how to take care of them, the main things to remember are:
Do not wet them for an absolute MINIMUM of 24 hours after application/infills so that the adhesive cures properly. This includes: steamy showers, heavy gym sessions, getting them wet in the rain, steam (like spending time in a hot spa or bath) and if it’s a super hot humid day, try to stay out of the heat. After 24 hours, it’s fine to wet them.
- Use only oil-free products, especially makeup remover
- No waterproof cosmetics
- Be careful when getting facials, they don’t like steam
- Do not rub them or pull at them
- Do not use a mechanical eyelash curler
- Gently brush them with your lash-wand
- It’s best not to use mascara on them if possible!
- Cleanse them properly 2-3 times per week.
- Avoid steam rooms, saunas, and hot yoga where possible.
Are the materials you use safe and good quality?
Yes – the eyelash extension adhesive we use is almost completely fume free, medical grade, and safe for your eyes – so no pain and burning! It is also very long lasting. The eyelash extensions used are the highest quality on the market, and are available in all sorts of lengths and thicknesses, customized to suit you! Can everyone use eyelash extensions?
Almost everybody can use eyelash extensions to increase the appeal and look of their eyes. The difference will be instant – your eyes will look sparkly and refreshed immediately! As the glue is applied directly to the eyelash, and does not touch the skin, there is very rarely any issue with allergic reactions.
Can I wear contact lenses/glasses with my eyelash extensions?
Yes, of course. However you may find it more comfortable to remove contacts before your appointment, or bring your contacts case so you can remove them immediately prior.
Will my lashes look fake with eyelash extensions?
No – not unless you want to. We will customize your lashes to suit you. You can have just a few at the corners, for some added sparkle to your eyes, a full set for a natural, heavy lashed look, or a glamour set for a more dramatic, or special events like weddings).
